Good evening all,
Tonight I would like to share my own ideas of composing. Currently, I define the term “writing” as the preservation of a thought through letters and numbers. I define the word “editing” as polishing of a written or composed work, where things may be re-arranged and improved. I define the term “composing” as the creation of something, which is much more broad because the artifact can be created in other means than writing. For example, music that is heard may be composed, as opposed to only being written. I have selected some key terms that I believe accurately define writing, editing, and composing. Some of these terms include: creativity, freedom, and planning. All of these terms aide in defining these three processes because they are integral in the process of creating. One must be creative in his or her endeavors, as well as having freedom and a lack of certain constraints in what he or she does. Similarly, I believe in order to write, edit, or compose, one must also be able to plan for what he or she envisions. My creation of project two, which consisted of an infographic of Florida State University’s College of Law, shaped my definitions of editing, writing, and composing because it required me to engage in all three processes. I incorporated writing into my infographic by including written facts about the law school. I also edited throughout my creation of the infographic, rearranging images and pieces of text. Finally, I composed the entire project through the creative process I engaged in. My experiences with writing, editing, and composing outside of my WEPO course have shaped my definitions in various ways. From a young age, I have engaged in writing throughout my earlier schooling. This experience with writing allowed me to develop the definition that in order for something to be considered writing, it must have the ability to be preserved. I developed my definition of composing through my experience in a music class, where I realized that symphonies are created and, therefore, composed. My definition of editing stems from my experiences in high school, where I would proofread fellow classmates’ essays, polishing the text and giving suggestions for improvement. All of these experiences contributed to my current understanding of writing, editing, and composing.
